Recently, Taizhou Sam Super-sized ETFE Air Pillow Canopy Project is conducting ETFE membrane tensioning and installation, with the outline of the new urban commercial landmark gradually clear. When the project entered the critical construction stage, Typhoon "White dolphin" landed and brought severe weather challenges. After the typhoon, on-site inspection showed the installed ETFE air pillow membrane structure was intact, the overall structure was stable, and its performance passed the typhoon test.

Typhoon "White dolphin" swept Taizhou coastal areas and impacted the construction site. After the typhoon, the construction team conducted an on-site inspection, confirming all installed ETFE membrane parts were intact with no damage.

The ETFE canopy is popular for its light and transparent appearance, and this thin soft membrane has good engineering performance. It has qualified tensile strength and elongation, buffers and dissipates strong wind pressure via air-membrane coupling with the inflation system, absorbs wind impact without brittle fracture, and fits the typhoon-prone coastal climate of Zhejiang. All steps from BIM wind load simulation, factory processing to on-site tensioning passed calculation verification, ensuring architectural aesthetics and structural safety under extreme conditions.

This test on the design, material and construction of the unfinished canopy under strong typhoon verified the whole system's reliability and accumulated valuable on-site experience for subsequent construction.

Currently, typhoon impact has been mitigated and construction has resumed. After completion, this lightweight ETFE air pillow canopy will be a key feature of Sam Outdoor Space. Natural light passing through the membrane creates a comfortable semi-open urban public space, bringing new leisure experience for residents. We look forward to its early unveiling in Taizhou.
